Bharata was one of the most illustrious kings of the Chandra dynasty, which was also referred to as the Bharata dynasty from his time. He was the son of Dushyanta and Shakuntala. He showed an aptitude for war from an early age and even defeated his father when he was still a boy. That story is told here.
He had many sons but he did not find any of them worthy of succeeding him. Therefore, he performed a great Yagna and a son named Bhumanyu was born to him. Bhumanyu was the successor to Bharata.
