Bharata is the son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya and his second queen Kaikeyi. His father wanted to crown Rama, his eldest son (by his first wife Kausalya), but Kaikeyi intervened and got him to make Bharata his heir-apparent. Rama was also sent on an exile for fourteen years to the forest, accompanied by his wife Sita and his brother Laxmana. Dasharatha died of grief.
While these events were taking place, Bharata was away from the kingdom. When he heard what had happened, he was extremely angry with his mother. He upbraided her with harsh words and tried to make his elder brother Rama to return to the Kingdom and take his rightful place on the throne. However, Rama would not break the promise made by his father. So, Bharata procured the slippers of Rama and installed them on the throne. He ruled for the fourteen years of his brother's exile as his regent, but did not sit on the throne.
