Chitravahana was the King of Manipur. He had a daughter named Chitrangada. Arjuna, who was wandering during his twelve year exile (for having broken the compact regarding Draupadi with Yudhishtra), met Chitrangada and fell in love with her.
As the King had no son to continue his line, he stipulated that the son born of this union should be brought up in Manipur, to succeed him. Arjuna agreed, and the child Babruvahana became the ruler of Manipur after his grandfather's demise.
