Danavas are the sons of Danu, a daughter of Daksha. Their father is the sage Kashyapa, who is a wish-born son of Lord Brahma. They are forces of evil, and are usually classified under the Asuras. In this respect they are similar to Daityas, the sons of Diti.
In the Rig Veda, nearly all the demons mentioned as being defeated by the Devas are Danavas. Vritra is the most famous of these demons.
