Ghatotkacha was the son of Bheema and a Rakshasa maiden named Hidimbi. His head was totally devoid of hair, and was shaped like a pot, and that is how he got his name. (Ghatam = pot). Like his father, he had immense strength and he inherited supernatural skills from his mother's side. He faught valiantly in the war of Kurukshetra and was killed by the Shakti weapon of Karna. As Karna could use this weapon only once, he had reserved it for use on Arjuna. Thus Ghatotkacha sacrificed his life to protect that of his uncle Arjuna.
