Ambika was the second of the Kashi princesses who were abducted by Bhishma to become the wives of his half-brother Vichitraveerya. However, the eldest Amba refused to marry him, on the plea that she was plighted to Shalwa and therefore only Ambika and Ambalika were married to Vichitraveerya.
Unfortunately, Vichitraveerya died before he could father any children. To propagate the Kuru race, Satyavati asked her elder son (born to her of a sage) Vyasa to father children on her daughters-in-law. When that fateful night came, Ambika could not bear the terrible appearance of the Rishi and closed her eyes tightly. She did not open them again that night. The son born out of that union was Dhritharashtra, who was born blind.
